Any modern mid-tier computer will do, be it a Dell or HP or Toshiba laptop with Windows 10, a MacBook Air/Pro/whatever, or some secondhand machine with Ubuntu. Who cares. Just get a basically functional environment set up and then focus getting good at what you want to do.

Cooling potential should be quite a bit better m1pro vs m2 with touch bar. The touch bar is the same design as the old ones. Just with a new chip. But idk. The m2 is less powerful, so less heat, and the m2 air has no fan. So in that regards the pro would be the less hot option.
Right now I would get the 14” M1 MacBook Pro 16/512. On sale at bestbuy foe $300 off makes it the same price as the M2 MacBook Pro and the 14” is a far better machine. I would recommend the M2 Pro! I think as you get deeper into the software development world, you find that the M2 Air has too many limitations.
OP, if you can afford to get 16GB of RAM, you should. But mostly because it will future-proof you machine better. However if not, 8GB will still serve you well, and you’ll be able to do any kind of software development you can think of. A potato is possibly enough for web and Swift development.
